Remember that the Maine Woods can be unforgiving, so make sure that you have a survival kit, compasses, and all the necessary equipment needed in case you need to spend the night in the woods. Maps and letting someone know where you are going hunting is always a good idea. If you are in need of a guide to help you with the Big Maine Woods, let us recommend and book a guide for you.

Deer Hunting

Bishops consistently has weighed in deer that have taken places of honor in the State Record Books! (Many times placing in Maine's top 10 largest bucks for the season.). During most years up to 25 percent of the bucks taken in the Jackman Moose River region weigh over 200 lbs. Heavy eight and ten-point racks are common. Although some other regions offer larger quantities of white-tail deer, no other region in Maine offers more consistently large world-class deer. Two easy winters have really helped the deer population.

Grouse Hunting

Grouse season runs through October and November. The regeneration of forest lands creates great bird cover. The grouse population has been growing and many hunters bag their limit daily!

Available to hunters, grouse hunting is a growing sport that produces many happy hunters that return every year.

Hare Hunting

The fastest-growing hunting season in the Jackman area is hare hunting. They are easily hunted with dogs or still hunting. Jackman is a popular hare hunting spot because of the number of hares in this area. Hunters are very successful and enjoy filling the daily bag limit of four. Sportsmen have no complaints about not getting enough action.

Moose Hunting

Moose Hunting is by permit only with a lottery set up to draw the lucky hunters. Bishop's Store is the only State of Maine Registration Agent in the area and weighs bulls in the 900 lb. class every year. Most hunters get their prize on the first couple of days of hunting. A success rate, near 100% is the normal expected kill. As a guest of Bishop's Country Inn Motel, owners Glenn and Denise can help tell you where the moose usually hang out.
